How do you recognise bush small-reed?
The leaf is 4–6 mm wide, soft, flat, and sparsely hairy on top. The inflorescence is a narrow panicle 10–20 cm long, ranging from pale green to reddish or bluish green.
What is it confused with?
Wavy hair-grass has thread-like leaves and a sparse, gauzy panicle. Bushgrass has a distinctly wider leaf and a denser panicle.
Where does bush small-reed grow, and when does it flower?
Bushgrass favours mesic and herb-rich heath forest, groves, the foot of rock outcrops, and burnt or cleared ground. Flowering is in July.
Can you collect it for a herbarium?
Bushgrass is a very common forest grass, and one flowering stem is enough.
