How do you recognise chickweed wintergreen?
A slender plant whose hairless, usually unbranched stem is 5–20 cm tall. The leaves are almost stalkless, lance-shaped or ovate, and brownish green. There are usually one or two flowers, white or sometimes pink, 11–19 mm across.
What is it confused with?
Most white-flowered forest plants have five or six petals. This one usually has seven lobes, and they can be counted on the spot.
Where does chickweed wintergreen grow, and when does it flower?
Grows in many kinds of forest, from dry heath to pine bog, but most often in moist heath forest. Flowering runs from May to July.
Can you collect it for a herbarium?
Chickweed wintergreen is a common forest plant, and one flowering shoot is enough.

The number of lobes varies, but seven is clearly the commonest, and that is what gives the flower its star shape. The plant often grows in wide patches from a single rootstock.
