How do you recognise goldenrod?
The stem ranges from a hand-span to a metre depending on how much light the site gets. The basal leaves are narrowly oval and serrated, the stem leaves narrow and stalkless. The upper stem carries a dense cluster of small yellow flower heads.
What is it confused with?
A dandelion has one head on a hollow leafless stem; goldenrod has many small heads on a leafy stem.
Where does goldenrod grow, and when does it flower?
Goldenrod grows in many kinds of place, from roadside verges to heath forest and rich fens. Flowering runs from July to September.
Can you collect it for a herbarium?
Goldenrod is common, and one flowering shoot is enough. Careful. Do not taste this plant.
Did you know?
The plant needs plenty of light: in shaded forest it stays a non-flowering rosette of leaves. It is among the last plants to flower in late summer.
