Pedunculate oak
How do you recognise pedunculate oak?
The leaf is somewhat leathery and pinnately lobed, its edge cut into rounded lobes on either side. The fruit is an acorn, a hard nut 2–3 cm long sitting in a cup. On a full-grown tree the bark is deeply furrowed and dark brown.
What is it confused with?
A maple leaf is also lobed, but its points are sharp where oak lobes are rounded. The acorn separates oak from every other tree here.
Where does pedunculate oak grow, and when does it flower?
Oak favours herb-rich, mesic or moist woodland on medium to rich soil. In Finland it flowers late in the spring, in May and June.
Can you collect it for a herbarium?
Oak grows wild only in the far south of Finland but is planted more widely. One leaf is enough. Careful. Do not taste this plant.
Did you know?
An acorn is a single-seeded nut, and squirrels and jays bury them as a winter store. Forgotten acorns grow into new oaks, so birds and squirrels spread the tree more effectively than the wind does.
