How do you recognise small-leaved lime?
The leaves are rounded and heart-shaped at the base with a pointed tip. In July the tree flowers pale yellow, and the scent is strong and heady.
What is it confused with?
An aspen leaf is round at the base rather than heart-shaped, and its stalk is flattened. A lime leaf has a clearly lopsided base.
Where does small-leaved lime grow, and when does it flower?
Small-leaved lime grows in groves, stream valleys, at the foot of cliffs, on fertile eskers and herb-rich heaths. Flowering is in July.
Can you collect it for a herbarium?
Small-leaved lime is scarcer in the wild but common in parks and yards, and one leaf is enough.
Did you know?
The scent draws bees, and the tree flowers in midsummer when most others have finished. The flower cluster hangs beneath a papery bract that acts as a wing when the seeds fall.
