How do you recognise stone bramble?
The leaf divides into three sharply toothed leaflets, hairless above and finely hairy beneath. The white flowers sit at the end of a short stalk, and the petals are 3–6 mm long, narrow, and upright.
What is it confused with?
Wild strawberry has coarsely toothed leaflets and open flowers with broad petals. Stone bramble petals are narrow and upright, so the flower looks almost closed.
Where does stone bramble grow, and when does it flower?
Stone bramble grows in groves, mesic forest, esker, rock and slope woodland, and on verges. Flowering is in June.
Can you collect it for a herbarium?
Stone bramble is a common forest plant, and one leafy shoot is enough.
Did you know?
The fruit is a bright red aggregate of only 2–6 drupelets, where a raspberry has dozens. The plant spreads by long runners across the forest floor.
